FROM THE EDITOR:

I gave the staff two months time to collect some extra money enabling them to go to Singapore for the staff outing. In the first week they collected roughly 10 juta rupiah from friendly customers. I asked Widi to make a chart that would show the guests how much the staff was away from the target. She hang a nicely drawn flowchart proudly behind the bar. However, one week later I noticed that the sharp increase in revenue had stagnated and that there had been hardly any new donations for the past 10 days! I was happy to see that the line was not going down at least, (then I really would start to worry), but asked why the staff didn't make any efforts anymore. Why not organize another theme night? The Hawaiian night was a success and added another 10 juta to their budget. 'Ya, we are thinking of a country & western night, but I don't know any cowboy bands... ', Widi apologized. I asked her to look out of the window. Some Taman Ria security guards were trying to catch some fish in the lake. 'What do you see there?', I asked her. 'Orang', she answered bluntly. 'Orang Apa?'  'Indonesians', she replied again. 'Correct. And if they would be wearing cowboy hats, what would you see then?' 'Cowboys', she immediately answered. After two seconds of hard thinking she continued: 'But they don't play in a band, Bart; they are security guards!' How could Bart be so stupid. 'Ok, Widi. Go and find a band of Indonesians and give them a cowboy hat, OK?'  Widi nodded. 'Ok. boss.'

Don't misunderstand me, Widi is one of the most valuable employee of BuGils, already since early 2000! But once in a while I just cannot communicate with her. Dead end communications. Like last week:

Me, slightly annoyed: 'Widi, how come there is no orange juice anymore!'
Widi: 'Ada, Bart! I ordered already!'
Me: 'But its not here yet. How come?'
Widi: 'Ada Bart. In the office. Lots of orange juice!'
Me; 'Well, can you not get it? As it is not here, we don't have orange juice'
Widi: 'The office door is locked. The office people went home already.'
Me: 'So, for tonight we don't have orange juice..'
Widi, now in a desperate voice: 'We have Bart! We have! I told you, its in the office!'
She looks at the other staff and shakes her head. The expression on her face was clear: 'My God, pfff....it is sometimes so hard to make something clear to the boss...He can be sooo stupid...!'

The revenue chart has now disappeared, maybe maluh (loss of face) because there have been hardly any new sponsors for the last few weeks. The outing to Singapore will still go ahead, but I am afraid it will be on an Indomie budget. Shouldn't be a problem for most of the group... At the moment I type this, (it is now far into the Monday night), Widi sent me an SMS with the daily sales report. It is a routine thing but this time I cannot help to smile. It is not because of the sales -they were low the last few days- but because of Widi. After giving Widi her first warning letter  in almost 6 years for not informing me on something bad that had happened in the bar a week earlier, she now made it routine to finish every SMS sales report with:  'Today nothing bad happened. Under control. Goodnight boss, Widi'. It is good to know BuGils is in good hands when I am not there. Even with the knowledge that once in a while there will be no orange juice.... Well, actually there is, but... Anyway, goodnight.  - Bartele

The Country & Western Night is planned for this coming Thursday.

All revenue will go to the staff. Please come and support.
