Archives Show US Support For Indonesia Abuses (Scoop)

FROM THE EDITOR:

Tomorrow at 16.30 you can watch Bule Gila (or BUGIL) at TransTV. In this second episode you can see how I compete with Robert selling cigarettes and serving food in a Padang restaurant! In BuGils we will show the program at a big screen, so if you can leave office a bit earlier you can enjoy and have a good laugh at this hilarious program! (Happy hour prices)

After I launched the idea a few weeks ago in this newsletter to start a kind of Indonesian Idol but then for waitresses, I had a few people showing their interest in working for BuGils. You may help and choose the right one.

Candidate A: Doesn't speak English much, but is good looking. Her father disappeared a few years ago and her mother is left with three children to feed. She did up and off jobs as standguide on exhibitions and for milk products in supermarkets. Was given a reception job once by an expat, but when he left Indonesia, she lost her job soon after that. Would prefer a daytime job but will take any job at the moment. Wants to work in BuGils because she needs the income to support her family.

Candidate B: Young and wild. Speaks even less then the 'Blok M' English but her outgoing personality makes up for that. Dubious background in Kota and became 'tough' at a young age in the Kota nightlife. Not good looking but her flirting will appeal to many male customers. Not too clever but strong minded and willing to work hard. Wants to work in BuGils as it is time she says to lead a 'clean life'.

Candidate C: Worked in a Chinese restaurant and is therefore disciplined and an experienced. Is quiet and soft-spoken and will probably not be seen drinking B-52's. Will not start a conversation and her lack of English will also not contribute to that. Will probably not make mistakes while taking orders and billing as she used to get fined for that in the Chinese restaurant. Wants to work in BuGils because her previous bosses 'banyak bohong'. Never got her service charge after 6 months working and her supervisor was often 'nakal'.

Candidate D: Tall and well built. Speaks English fluently and although not highly educated, does know what's going on the world. Is probably a very nice open viewed person to indulge in any conversation. Has some experience in the service industry but never really took efforts to find a 'better' job. Maybe because of laziness after she lived with an expat for couple of years. Now she is single again and needs the money for her own livelihood. Wants to work in BuGils because the money is good and the working conditions flexible.

I will be happy to hear from you what you think is important to become a 'BuGils waitress' and give your favorite choice A, B, C or D. Also let me know if you need more info. If you don't want your name to be mentioned, no problem.

Best regards,  Bartele

FROM A READER:

Hi Bart,

Seen the picture of your staff, looks like they are really happy and enjoying working with you!!!. Its nearly a year now and I always follow your newsletter, I really do like it and its really interesting. I went to BUGILS a few times when I was there(Jakarta), and will never forget you and your place because one time I was there with your friendly smile and Dutch English accent, and you offered me free Dutch Meat Balls it tasted very nice and I said to my friend " this is good....free". It reminded me of when I was a waitress another bar (one bar in Jakarta). That time I was the best sales girl (waitress) as I always sold more beverage then any other staff and we got points everytime we sold drinks, this was good because I got extra money. But its wasnt good because of the pressure to keep the rule from the bar and too much judgement if we made a mistake, example; when we have to handle "The Drunken Bule", we have to make sure he will pay the bill and make sure he will not break the glasses or take them  with him as well. And if you make that mistake the management will straight away send you a letter saying " you lost points this month ect...." so we would get less money than we should, and if we conplained or dissagreed they would say " Fine, you keep your job or you complain ..Bye!!!!" thats what they always said. wooops... that mistake will never happen to me, but one time I got a Big Penalty from them because I had to go home to see my parents in Central Java for "Lebaran" so, I told my Boss "i will need 5 days off work" this was is a month before the "Lebaran". 5 days before the day I went, they still did not give the agreement answer "Fine I'll wait", then the day before I was due to go, I asked again but the answer really Pissed me off because they said "NO" So i thought F**k them. I have to go and have a good time with my family and friend in my KAMPUNG to celebrate the "Lebaran".  5 days later I got back to work and they gave me a WARNING LETTER saying "we ARE TAKING 35% of your salary this month because you broke the rules or you can get a BAN for 2 weeks" I knew that they would never say "YOURE FIRED" as they would lose their best sales girl in the bar. But, I am not stupid, I had already applied for another job and it was a much better job than the one in this bar. I had typed my resignation letter 3 days after I got the warning, and gave it to them. Their response was very good they said please dont make a quick decision like this, but it would never change my mind. A month later I started working at a Real Estate Company in Jakarta as Junior Training Sales Girl it was much..much ..better place than before and the industry was good as well. Now I have lived in Spain for ten months with my Boy Friend and work with him running his own Estate agency in the Costa del Sol Spain. Lately I heard that the bar I worked in is empty, noone likes to go there its still Open but getting really C**p now because they dont look after their staff. SO BART,THE MORALE OF THIS STORY IS,ALWAYS LOOK AFTER YOUR STAFF,AND REMEMBER IF YOU PAY PEANUTS YOU GET MONKEY"s KEEP UP THE GOOOOOD WORK

Adios,...hasta pronto..
