"Stop. We do not accept or serve bogus journalists..."

 text on bumper stickers

handed out on the "No to bogus journalists day" in Yogyakarta

AS if crop-destroying monkeys, algal blooms suffocating fish stocks and illegal loggers plundering forests were not enough, Indonesia has a new plague - bogus journalists. The imposters have been invading government offices and companies warning they will expose corruption or other wrongdoing if they are not paid a bribe.

Australian JI leader tracked down by Indonesian agents

LATEST:

No proof former Aussie school teacher is militant leader: Police
Indonesia's top anti-terrorist investigator said on Friday there was "no proof" a former Australian school teacher believed to be in Indonesia heads the Australian branch of theJamaah Islamiyah militant group. Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Friday confirmed elements of a report in The Australian newspaper which said Ayub was located about three months ago in Puncak, a town near the West Java city of Bogor. Ayub, who The Australian said was a dual Australian-Indonesian national, has not been arrested but has been cooperating with Indonesia's national intelligence agency, BIN, and remains under the watch of BIN agents, the newspaper said. Howard confirmed that Ayub had been located and questioned by the Indonesians, but declined to elaborate further.  Pranowo, director of the U.S.-trained Special Detachment 88 anti-terrorist squad, denied that Ayub was co-operating with the authorities. "He is free," said Pranowo. "We don't have proof that he has committed any violations."  The JI has been outlawed as a terrorist organization in Australia, but is not banned in Indonesia.  Ayub and his twin brother Adbul Rahman, were identified as the leaders of JI in Australia by Jack Roche, a British-born convert to Islam who last month became the first Australian convicted of terrorism offenses. Indonesian woman jailed for soliciting
The Bandar Seri Begawan Court sentenced a 39-year-old Indonesian woman to two months' imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to soliciting a male for the purpose of prostitution. She was found half-naked in Room No. 4, at a building in Jalan Tutong when the police officers raided the room. She was found with a male person. An unused condom was found on a small table in the said room.  The Public Prosecutor said the defendant admitted to having prostituted herself for the past two months for payments between $25 to $40. FROM THE EDITOR:

Many people responded on the BuGils 'Idol' Waitress contest and I copied a few emails of the readers in this editorial. In general Candidate 'D' had the most votes, followed closely by 'A'. After the first round we can conclude that expats don't prefer a flirting bar maid. They also don't need a correct and fast service:  good looks and a nice conversation are rated much higher. A remarkable finding is that many expats do consider the social factor important. Nevertheless, even with the knowledge that the person really needs the job to feed her family, more people choose 'D', as she more western and 'well built'. In the next edition we concentrate on A and D only and I will add their pictures. If there is any question you have, please send it to me. Like 'how would you handle a drunken Scotsman' (the correct answer would be: 'I would make sure he pays before he is thrown in the Taman Ria lake') and 'How would you deal with harassment?' (The right answer would be: 'That felt good! Hit me again!'). I do often receive complaints (mostly from our Indonesian customers!) who find a number of our staff 'sombong' (snobby) and 'scary'. As we in BuGils choose to have a 'liberal' style of management, I guess it is the consequence of hiring waitresses with attitude and (maybe too much) character. The line is thin and maybe I would prefer a more friendly addition to the collection of staff I have so far. But then again, you are the customer, you choose. Here some emails from readers:

I prefer the candidate A. She seem honest and willing to work. Not flirt or expect more except to got money and support the family. but u should checked her background i think...?? or u dnt hv tooo...?? Chiao, V.

We NEED pictures!!!! We want to see them pouring beers, smiling, and wearing BuGils dress! So we can look into their souls and truly see if they are good bar staff. A picture is a thousand words, and many pictures from different angles would be even better. Also if you hire a girl that is not as attractive/social as the other girls, it may depress her and us…. as bar maidery is in the eye of the beholder. Regards, M.

Bart, As my dear old Dad said to me: "when in doubt, choose the one with the largest chest". so, I guess choose the good looking one, besides she has her family to take care of - so you get the sympathy thing going. cheers, L.

Nice candidates for the perfect waitress. However, being a female regular, and a heterosexual, it would be nice if BuGils- had a 'good-looking' and 'smart' WAITER? Please? Just one? :)  S.

Bartele, My vote goes to BUGILS WAITRESS APPLICANT - # A. To me it's a no-brainer. Why? Because this lady states that she needs the money to assist her abandoned mother with three children. Ergo, if Applicant A starts work at BuGils every BuGils customer is by association (even if unwittingly) helping to support three fatherless Indonesian children. Cheers, E.R.

hello, Mine name is Raymond and I do read your newsletter already for some time. It's nice to read sometimes the stupid things what happens in Jakarta and also the serious things.I just like it. And what about the contest for your waitresses at bugils. For every one of them you can say something good or bad but the want what I think is the most suitable is number B. Not only because she is young and wild and have already seen something of live, but more that she knows how to handle whit bule, special bule gila or bule kampong.depends in which way you look at it. R.

Bartele, I am no longer living in Indonesia, so don't know if my vote counts, but I think that candidates A and D best fit in with the atmosphere of Bugils as I have know it and would like to see it remain (for when I return on expected vacations). Between the two, I would probably lean toward candidate D.  C & D seem to be on opposite ends of the scale and outside the mid range that keeps the flavour of Bugils tradition. Best regards, and I look forward to seeing your choice (I hope in the fall) B.S.

hi Bart, my priority order 4yr waitresses.... D, A, B, C.... but just hire them all 4 and will know which profile is the most succesful later....  rgds, F.

In the next edition the pictures and a report of our staff outing to Yogyakarta this weekend. The bar will stay open with free-lancers. Hope to see you again on Tuesday evening! Cheers, Bartele
