A reality TV show was announced featuring baby-faced actor Ari Wibowo's search for a maid. Quarantined in a spacious house, the 20 finalists will compete on TV for 3 months, performing routine chores such as cooking meals and baby-sitting, and more unusual tasks such as finding a lost handphone. However only one real maid reached the show's finals... Source: Indonesians fight to be a maid in new TV show

Indonesians fight to be a maid in new TV show
When an Indonesian reality TV show was announced featuring baby-faced actor Ari Wibowo's, (a regular customer of BuGils Cafe-red), search for a maid, thousands were suddenly jostling for a job that normally means low pay, endless hours, and sometimes abuse. New-York-based Human Rights Watch reported widespread physical and sexual abuse of hundreds of thousands of young girls working as maids in Indonesia. Some girls as young as 11 endure long working hours, paltry pay, lack of education and no days off. But Producer Punjabhi brushed off suggestions his show was in effect making light of a serious situation. (Reuters)

BuGils Staff Prepares for Outing Abroad
In a new surprise move the BuGils manager decided to plan their next staff outing to Singapore. 'I don't know if any other company in Indonesia has ever offered trips abroad for their staff, but it took a few days before even my staff believed I was serious about this. Now, suddenly, they are all in a hurry to make passports!' The trip is planned for September. How can a small company like BuGils afford this? The manager: 'We cannot. But we do reserve money for outings twice a year. Now additional money is needed and I asked the staff to come up with ideas to raise this money. Their first idea was to put a collection box on the bar. I refused. Too easy and not nice. So now they are organizing events and the revenue will go to them. You can also book a Widi, Heny, Vi or Riza for lunch or diner (and diner only!) and pay a Rp.200.000 rupiah booking fee. Some people will not be happy with this idea, but before I could stop them, they had already collected a few million in down payments! Their first surprise night is scheduled for August 8, a date to mark on your calendar. They also have a night planned 'for women only'.
Latest news is that a few companies are keen on sponsoring if the staff will wear their company logo on the shirts. Already one TV station has shown interest to follow these 15 girls and one lucky manager on their trip abroad! Who spread the rumor that BuGils was close to shutting down? Tidak lah yau!  (BuGils Daily)

SATURDAY in BUGILS: SLIM DONY AND THE JAYA PUB BAND !

 ---------------------------------------

FROM THE EDITOR:

Right-click here to download pictures. To help protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture from the Internet. The heavy rainfall didn't stop the customers from coming. The Space Building developers in Taman Ria had decided that our drainage pumps could be used somewhere else. I didn't realise this until the kitchen staff started shouting from the back that water was running into BuGils from everywhere! The level started raising rapidly and within one hour we had almost 20 cm of water in our bar. Scary enough, some of the lights went off, one by one, apparently because of short circuits. The staff tried to keep up with the rising water levels by singing Dji Sam Soe, while emptying hundreds buckets of rainwater. It was to no avail. When Widi was almost electrocuted by one of the two beer taps, we quickly turned it off, leaving one tap open. It felt like the place was falling down on me. Could this be the final day of BuGils? I decided it was better to close the place after one customer complained that his new expensive shoes were soaked. But just went I wanted to inform the staff - by now all totally wet and on bare feet - they were shouting in excitement: they found a push cart on which the newly arrived people could jump on. Then the staff would push this little trolley through 20 cm of water to the bar or the toilet or wherever the guest wanted to sit. The excitement was complete.

'Only in BuGils!' said one customer with a happy look on his face.  'I was here when it happened' , said another proudly.  I managed to get one supervisor from the next door project over. He glimpsed through a window inside the bar and couldn't believe his eyes: the cafe had turned into a large swimming pool filled with happy bule's around the bar with their pants high rolled up and waitresses singing and jumping behind the bar, splashing in the water.  The project developer was not keen in taking responsibility. 'Harus lewat procedure!' (you have to follow the procedures), he said. I hadn't expect any other answer. 'Can you not take some action now? We are in trouble!', I asked him in desperation. He shrugged his shoulders. 'Lewat procedure. Dan itu proses lama! Coba aja.' (it will be a long proces, but you can try), he said and quickly disappeared again.

On the vague picture (taken with mobile): staff pushing customers on a trolley through the bar

I waded back inside and noticed there was now only Widi behind the bar. The others had suddenly disappeared. Then I looked into the billiard area were 8 waitresses were all quietly sitting on the pool table eating MacDonald's! They had decided it was picnic time after a few hours of hard work! Irritated I grabbed a bucket and intended to start fighting the water myself. And funny enough, Indonesians don't like this approach. It has something to do with loss of face or status; bosses are not supposed to do cleaning work. It was interesting to see what was more important for them: food or loss of face for the boss. The juniors quickly put their food back in the bags and jumped up to take over. The senior waitresses were a bit slower. They tried to insert as much food as they could in their mouth before rising slowly from the pooltable and back into the water.

Bob his wife didn't want to jump on a trolley so she took off her shoes and carefully entered the bar. Bob had not left his barstool since early afternoon. 'He said he was stranded on an island and couldn't get off. I thought I better check and pick him up'. While standing to her heels in the water she looked around and made her conclusion: 'Well, at least he didn't lie this time..'.  Bob turned around and saw his wife coming towards him. He raised his arms high in the air. His face expressed an enormous surprise. 'My wife!', he shouted. 'My wife is walking on the water! I am married to Jesus!'

On the pictures: Some customers during unusual heavy rainfall in Jakarta for this time of the year.

The next day the Taman Ria management apologized and even offered to help with sending claims to the project developer. It seems that these two parties are not going along with each other. Maybe that's why the project never seems to finish. Good for us. Where in the world can a bar do business as usual while there is 20 cm of water on the floors? Only in Indonesia. Or should I say.... ONLY in BuGils...?   -- Bartele

Indonesia hit by petrol shortagesBajaj drivers fill up at a petrol station in Jakarta, Indonesia
One the world's biggest oil producers struggles to end subsidised prices for petrol. Lack of investment in the oil sector over the past decade, coupled with a rapid increase in domestic demand has meant that Indonesia now has to import extra fuel to make up the difference. Civil servants have been told to go easy on the air conditioning and street lights in major cities are being switched off. Television and radio stations have been asked to close down overnight (although there is an exemption for European football games!) and ministerial motorcades will be reduced, all in a bid to save power. Death in Jakarta
Desperate to bury his daughter, he had no money to pay for an ambulance to take her to a nearby cemetery. So he decided to carry her several kilometers in his cart to a Jakarta train station to reach the town of Bogor where he had friends who could help him. It was while he waited at the city's Tebet station, carrying his daughters body in a sheet of cloth in his arms and still with less than a dollar to his name, that local vendors grew suspicious and called the police. How to Stop The Contagion This is battle, not an academic seminar. We in the West have to discredit, delegitimize and dismantle barbaric ideas. If you want to understand what motivates suicide bombers, watch the recent movie "Downfall." Based on eyewitness accounts, it chronicles the final days inside Hitler's bunker. In a particularly harrowing scene, Joseph Goebbels and his wife are given the opportunity to have their six young children flee to safety. But Magda Goebbels refuses and instead drugs the kids to sleep. Then she inserts a cyanide capsule into each child's mouth and presses the jaws until the capsule breaks. When explaining why she won't allow her kids to escape, Mrs. Goebbels explains, "I can't bear to think of them growing up in a world without national socialism." (Newsweek)

LOOKING FOR:  Recently arrived expat would like to start pursuing my main hobby again, which is playing in a band. I'm a bass player who has been playing in bands downunder for 20 years, and I'm looking to hook up with other expats who are interested in forming a blues, classic rock or top 40 band for playing maybe once a week in a bar. Or perhaps an acoustic duo/trio of some sort. I have pro quality gear and some vocals. I'm in this for fun, not money. Cheers,  Mark  / mdeayton@bigpond.com
