In
Indonesia, media on the payroll
Koran Indonesia looks deceptively like a
normal newspaper, but is
clearly slanted to make Indonesian President Megawati
Sukarnoputri's government look good. "The economy has recovered,"
reads one headline, while another announces: "Farmers are getting
wealthier."
The
paper appeared on newsstands on the first day of campaigning for
Indonesia's first direct presidential elections, and it comes as
no surprise that it's funded by Megawati's campaign team. (Taipei
Times)
Indonesia
deplores hard line on fishing
Indonesia has formally complained about the sinking of two fishing
boats in Australia's northern waters.
Jakarta
is also expected to protest over a policy, announced by the Howard
Government this week, which will lead to the destruction of almost
all boats caught fishing illegally in Australian waters. (SMH)
"Indonesia will be
free from drug abuse and drug trafficking by 2015. When I was
asked if it is possible, I said it is Indonesia's responsibility,
because the ASEAN wants its member countries to be free from drug
abuse by 2015..."
Togar Sianipar of the National Drugs
Eradication Board (BNN)
He made the statement when giving directions on
narcotics eradication to religious leaders, scholars, police
personnel and a number of non-governmental organizations concerned
with drug abuse. (Antara)

FROM THE EDITOR:
This morning I received a number of calls and SMS messages from
friends who told me that our dangdut video 'Goyang Goyang'
was broadcasted by MTV Indonesia! It will be shown daily for the
next 4 weeks on TV. Coincidentally BuGils is asked to participate
in a 26 episode TV program called 'Bule Gila' and I am in the
second episode as a Padang Food salesman! Well, as long as it is
fun, why not...
 Tomorrow
a lot of sports on the big screens in BuGils; LIVE RUGBY and
FOOTBALL. It's going to be a busy day tomorrow, so I called in
the help from some 'old' BuGils staff: Yayang, Rosaline &
Leila. Yayang has been confirmed. Even some rumors that Ari Tiga
Hari might show up. It is going to be long night coming Saturday,
all the way to 5 O'clock Sunday morning. I receive often
complaints about my staff making mistakes or even sometimes of
being impolite, but it must also be said that they work hard when
needed. In surprise I was confronted with a furious Brit last
night, 1 minute after England won with 3-0.
He
was outrageous that he could not get a beer during the game.
Strange, because I was sitting on the tribune and the flow was
coming through at a high speed. Sometimes we expats are getting to
much used to being served and are becoming too lazy to get up and
walk 5 meters to get things organized. And if 100 guests ask
for the bill after a football game, all at the same time, why do
some customers not understand that it takes some time to handle
the sudden flow? But other complaints are justified, like the
volume of music that mysteriously always goes up as soon as I walk
out of the bar. I am thinking to introduce an electric shock
appliance that I can use on the staff from a distance. But as a
compensation the customers should allow me to use it on them as
well. For example if they don't drink fast enough!
Anyway,
fellow expats, lets relax a bit and enjoy while we are here.

Temasek eyes stake in Indonesia’s Bank Permata
Singapore government investment firm Temasek Holdings Pte Ltd
aims to buy a stake in PT Bank Permata after acquiring PT Bank

FROM A READER:
Hi Bart,
Somehow, between Mad Dogs, my house and The
Hyatt hotel I managed to lose my handphone ten days ago.
Arrgghhhh! How many numbers had I not recently downloaded?
Goblok, I thought as I was sat in the ProXL shop for an hour the
next day, trying to get the same number back. To my surprise,
this was fairly easy, although the wait was rather tedious.
Having got a new SIM card with my old number, I was off to ITC
Kuningan to get another phone. I hate shopping at the best of
times, so I wanted to be in and out in ten minutes. An hour and
a half later I walked out with a shiny new Nokia 7650, massive
memory, camera, SMS, MMS, FBI, CIA, you name it, this phone did
everything except things the reason that Blok M was invented
for.
After spending the best part of the week
plugging in my old contact numbers from business cards and
friends, I ventured out one evening to the aforementioned Blok
M. Unlike you, I did not arrive in a CD plated Limo, but still a
rather decent taxi and ended up in your aforementioned My Bar
with a couple of the chaps. The night went on, the girls went by
and the drinks went down. At 4:30am...ish, the usual SMS came
through "Where are you?" Time to hit the road! Although not
completely smashed, I got in the first taxi I saw outside My Bar
and enough grog ensured a little doze on the way home. Upon
being rudely shaken awake, the guy was asking for Rp.30,000. I
get out of the taxi to get to my wallet and notice my shiny new
handphone on the seat at the same time the taxi driver sees it.
Just as I get my fingers on it, the son of a
b%#ch slams on the gas and speeds
off down the road! By the time I'd sprinted/staggered down the
road, he'd gone!
So, this is just a reminder to all discerning
partakers of the amber fluid, even taxi drivers NEED a shiny new
handphone so that they can SMS each other about the last drunken
bule they had just robbed. I doubt if my taxi driver is even
literate, but just by some miracle he reads this: May you have a
broken aircon in every taxi you drive, may you encounter 'macet'
at every turn and a policeman every kilometer......Oh, and may
the cockroaches of a thousand taxis infest yours forever and a
day, Amen!
Cheers, mate. -- Glen
