Indonesian maids accused of murder get top lawyers in legal first

Top lawyers have been assigned to defend two Indonesian maids accused of murdering a Singaporean woman in a legal first in the city-state. Jimmy Yim is representing 19-year-old Juminem, and Alvin Yeo is defending 16-year-old Siti Aminah. The scheduled 15-day trial starts March 28. It is the first time the state has assigned senior counsel to act for defendants in a capital case and is part of a general move to raise the standards of representation. The maids, who appeared on Tuesday before a magistrate, are alleged to have jointly caused the death of Juminem's employer, Ang Imm Suan, a 47-year-old procurement specialist in an oil company. Ang was found  strangled on her bed with bruises on her neck, hands and legs. Juminem had worked for Ang for about six months before the slaying. The other maid had worked for Ang's second husband. FROM THE EDITOR:

In the early nineties I lived in Yogyakarta, not far from the infamous Pasar Kembang. I was once sitting in one of the many alleys in the back backer area called Sosrowiyayan when this very elegant young Indonesian girl passed by. She was walking the gentle and almost gracious walk only the women from middle Java can do, swirling her hand just a bit further backwards then the average woman and turning her hips just that one centimeter further.  She was parading slowly through Gang 2 of Jalan Sosrowiyayan. Her friendly eyes turned to me and with a flaw smile she calmly said: 'Sate, Mister?' It was only now that I realized that she had an enormous rotan plate on her head, carrying at least a hundred sate sticks. In one hand she carried a small stove, in the other a bucket with some plates. I was stunned by this beauty in a long colorful batik skirt. The sate girl kneeled down in the little alley. 'Satu porsie?' , I nodded a shy yes and she started heating up the few coals in the mini stove with a kipas angin. I noticed that her features were very much Western; she had a remarkable white skin, an almost European nose and an above Indonesian length. I asked her where she was from. 'Marengan, a small kampung in East Madura', she replied shy. 'Madura?!' I reacted in surprise. 'Madurese are normally dark skinned!' She didn't respond but concentrated on her job. It was probably the best sate I had every had. The word Marengan somehow stayed in my mind.

Why the above story? I'll tell you. A few years later in the mid nineties I came across a book written by A.Alberts who was administrator for the Dutch government on the island of Madura. In 1939 he was stationed in the lonely far outpost of the East Madura town of Sumenep. In one of his chapters of the book 'The Islands' (and later more detailed in 'In and out from Paradise') he described a small village named Kampung Belanda (Dutch village). He wrote about a large number of descendants from Dutch VOC employees living there. In houses with typical Dutch gardens, signs on the fences with names as Meyer, Van Duyne, Tans and others, some Dutch families had settled here in the late 18th century. There is -until today (I searched the internet) still an old Dutch fort not many people know about, built in the 1700's. Probably these first settlers worked here and never left. In the late 19th century a Dutch trader ship wrecked in front of the coast and a few more Dutch people were added to this remarkable community. In Albert's his books he writes about the visits to this people who had large numbers of old Dutch paintings and antiques in their houses and their Dutch customs that had faded over of the centuries. The name of this village? Marengan. It was the second time I heard of this kampung.

Last week I bought a car. On that same day I stumbled -for the 3rd time in almost 15 years by coincidence in the Erasmus library again over kampung Marengan. While I was looking for books about Captain Westerling, I pulled out of the shelves 'The Islands' written by Aalberts. It shouldn't be were it was. It was in the wrong section, but anyway, I opened the book and the first words I read where: 'A village in the sun'. It was kampung Marengan again!. It seems I have no other choice to step in my car and go there. Some mystery power is pulling me. I want to find out what is left of the Kampung Belanda on Madura. I want to see the old Dutch fort or what remains of it. I want to touch the golden grail with diamonds that Dirk van Duyne the first saved from his shipwreck in 1870. And maybe I can meet his descendant Dirk van Duyne the fifth or sixth and find out if he possible has a daughter who sells sate in Yogya. I don't know why, but I just have to go...

How to sell this planned to trip to my shareholders? Survey for a BuGils branch at Madura? Trying my new car? Mmmhh... I will think of something. I'll keep you informed. - Bartele

Queen Elizabeth greets Jeff Beck, watched by, from second left, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Brian May of Queen.

He may have been known as "God" by rock fans, but legend Eric Clapton's a bit of a mystery to the Queen. And so is Queen's Brian May, and Led Zepplin's Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck.  "And what do you do?" was her question to the four giants of the music industry. Brian May reminded Her Majesty that he played the National Anthem on the roof of the Palace to start the 2002 Golden Jubilee rock concert. "Oh! That was you was it?" the Queen exclaimed. Moving on to Jimmy Page, the Queen inquired: "Are you a guitarist too?" Eric Clapton took no chances and, firmly shaking the Queen's hand, introduced himself by name. "Have you been playing a long time?" the Queen asked. "It must be 45 years now," replied Clapton, 59.  Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell turned up 40 minutes late for the reception at Buckingham to celebrate the British music industry. (SMH)

Hoegaarden White is the authentic Belgian wheat beer, top fermented and then refermented in the bottle. Hoegaarden White has a distinctive hazy yellow colour, and an alcohol content of 5% vol. This is a sweet/sour beer with a little bitterness - slightly spicy, with a strong touch of coriander and a hint of orange. Decidedly interesting and very refreshing.

''Examining the Threats to Indonesia's National Interests''

As Southeast Asia's largest and most powerful state, Indonesia is a keystone country that is courted by both China and the United States. Both countries seek to gain influence in Jakarta, especially since the country patrols the Malacca Straits -- a critical passageway for global trade. Indonesia can attempt to balance the two powers off each other, gaining economic and military benefits from both while preserving its autonomy. (PINR)
