FROM THE EDITOR:

It was 7.30am in the morning, far too early to be dealing with the events that were about to unfold. I was barely out of my car when a handful of Dutch and Indonesian women called me from a distance, ' Bartele Santema, we want a word with you'. I knew I was in trouble as they were using my full name. It had seemed innocent enough, I was running a little late dropping my daughter off at her School in South Jakarta. Being the upstanding member of the community that I am you understand I was completely alert and not hung over at all, one has an image to uphold after all.  'Your staff in BuGils are crazy!' said one. I quickly maneuvered my daughter to her class while this thought was spinning around my head. What had happened this time!? Everybody in Jakarta already knows my staff are crazy, this is nothing new. Over the last six years of BuGils existence it has become the bar's trademark. But now these mothers, some of them regular visitors of BuGils, seemed to be very upset.

A few of them  pretended to smile while another shrieked, "do you know me, I am the Ibu gemuk! (fat woman)". When I've been accosted by crazed customers in the past I find it best to try and slip away quietly but this time I had no choice. Obviously something had upset the mothers and whether I liked it or not I had to deal with it. Another mother stormed out of a classroom asking the others if they had already told me. I turned around. 'What has happened, what have I done wrong?' She stood in the classroom door while two or three other mothers gathered around us, surrounding me. I was starting to feel intimidated, 'We had a party in BuGils last week and we were enjoying ourselves until we asked for our bills.' Another mother jumped in. 'It was that tall girl with long hair, she's to blame! We were so angry!' I thought it was about a wrong bill, maybe they had paid too much but, no, that was not the problem.

Apparently the staff, to help identify people unknown to them, had given each of them descriptions on the order notes. They often do that, enabling them to remember who ordered what. Normally they write things like 'Bold man with Indonesian girlfriend', 'Woman with red hair' or 'small fat guy who never leaves a tip', but unfortunately not this time. The irate mother continued her rant: ''When we checked the order notes, trying to find out who consumed what, they had divided the bills between Ibu Keriting (mother with curly hair), Ibu Gemuk (the fat mother), Ibu Indo, Ibu Tua (the old mother) and Ibu Kurus Tinggi! (the tall and skinny mother)The mothers looked at me, awaiting my response. Over their shoulders I saw a concierge preparing the coffee stand. Before I could answer they continued. 'And she also forgot some of the orders. We told her to better write the orders down, but she said she had enough brains to remember the orders by heart. Well, she didn't!'  I apologised and told them I would suspend the waitress in question. 'Just a warning will be enough', the women agreed. At least they had an evening not to forget, I thought and excused myself.

Last night when I stepped into BuGils I immediately looked for Novel, the waitress who was to blame for the row at the Dutch school hours earlier yesterday. She confirmed what had happened, but it was because it had been 'sooo busy' she didn't have the time to ask for their names. She promised it would not happen again.

On the picture: Henny, Novel and Yunita, sooo innocent....

Later that night, just before I left, I had a quick but satisfying look at the order notes behind the bar. One read: 'The woman that smells so nice'. Another one: 'the handsome man in expensive suit' and 'young couple, very friendly'. I couldn't help to smile while I left the doors from BuGils. Behind me I heard Novel: 'Going home? Bye Bart!' I looked around and saw Novel and two other waitresses laughing. I am loosing my control, I thought. But then, did I ever have any control in BuGils? Bartele, the little fat barman....
