FROM THE EDITOR:

And you think that terrorists are the only ones who can blow you up? Wrong.

For more than ten years I had continuously moved the appointment with a dentist forward. But now I had a sore tooth and even an alcohol cure didn't help anymore.

The lamps above me were bright. The music was relaxing but my palms were sweating. I was nervous. The lady with rubber gloves had a quick look in my mouth and her first reaction was not promising. After a first glimpse she fell back with a deep sigh. Her chair rolled a meter backwards. Bad breath? Could it be the Bombay gin from the night before? Slowly and with another sigh she came forward again. 'How long have you not been to a dentist?' she asked me. As soon as I said 'ten years', she immediately pointed at the adjacent room. 'Rontgen Photo', she said coolly.

The dentist pointed from left to right over the X-ray, tapping on almost every tooth on the photo. 'See this black spot? That's a huge hole.. And these fillings next to it need to be redone. But what worries me most is this...' She pointed at a grey area under my wisdom teeth. It was the one that caused me so much trouble over the last few days. 'This is an infection that could become serious'. Now she grabbed a pen and paper and wrote down the words: 'ROOT CANAL TREATMENT' in large letters. That didn't sound promising. She started drawing scary constructions. I laid back in the not uncomfortable chair and looked at the dentist's assistant. I was sure that behind that mouthpiece was a beautiful woman hiding. I hardly listened to the dentist who was now writing down amounts of '6 to 8 juta'. She wrote down another word: 'CROWN' and she paused again to await my questions. I was not in a hurry and maybe because I was not really reacting, her tone became more serious. I was convinced she was trying to sell me some kind of expensive treatment. 'Can I not take the risk and do it later? It is not hurting that much...'. Now she became frantic. 'No!' It is very dangerous, you know!' My eyes turned to the assistant again. Her eyes smiled. The dentist frantically scratched another few lines on the paper and held it up high. 'You see? If you don't take treatment your jaw can explode!' She looked at me with wide open eyes. Explode!? Now I was absolutely sure she was after a -for her - profitable treatment. A root canal bomb threat? She really pushed it. 'We can start now! Ok?' Her assistant looked in another way as if she was ashamed for her boss's practices. 'We can do it another time', I said politely. The dentist was clearly irritated with this missed opportunity and starting cleaning my teeth without saying another word. She did manage to sell me a plastic bottle of mouth-wash that was 'the best of the world'. The X-ray was 250.000, the cleaning 600.000 and the little bottle 200.000. Why she didn't fill the 'huge' hole she was talking about earlier, I don't know. Low profit margin?

When I paid the hefty bill for 5 minutes of cleaning, I noticed the head of the assistant peeking from behind a door. It was a quiet goodbye and I wondered why she didn't want to show her face. Was she trying to keep me curious, so I would come again? Nah... I went straight to BuGils, satisfied knowing that my wisdom tooth was still intact. -- Bartele

FROM A READER:

Bartele,

It was embarrassing to read McKay's anti-communist rant in your last
edition. There are, as I assume you are well aware, very good reasons to
question the official government version of the events of 1965. And you
do not have to be a left wing Commie lover to be suspicious of the
government line. I am puzzled as to what prompted you to allow such an
immature analysis to appear in your newsletter. But please be advised
that printing such drivel greatly detracts from the appeal of your newsletter.

Dear M,

The opinion of people writing to me, is not necessary my opinion. I am happy to receive and publish letters from readers with the idea of creating some interaction. Besides that, I do not always have enough time (yet) to search for more interesting clippings, so I am happy to fill it up with views from readers. But it certainly is not my intention to dedicate a big chunk of this newsletter to reappraisals of Indonesian history. Too risky lah... .

Bart

Here is another viewpoint which he may dismiss as propaganda, but equally deserves an airing:  http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Oct05/Roosa-Nevins1031.htm

As he says, even if the PKI did kill the generals, it would only have been a small part of the PKI which hardly justifies killing 300,000 (1 million, pick a number) PKI members and miscellaneous others, even if the CIA did provide encouragement and the odd hit-list.

Finding a neutral opinion may not be easy! And the “facts” seem to be what you what them to be. I would not want to get into a public debate on this as I do not know enough about it and the many of the “facts” are too suspect. I just feel that giving one hard line anti-Communist all that space is not a good idea (i.e. I don’t like it!)

Regards, R.
