Not physical war, morality war..."

Indonesia police make first Bali blasts arrests

Balinese students shout slogans during an anti terrorism demonstration in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, Monday, Oct. 10, 2005Indonesian police have made their first arrest over this month's suicide bombings on the resort island of Bali, picking up an individual in East Java suspected of links to the attacks, police said on Tuesday. "This person is strongly suspected of having links with the Bali blasts," deputy national police spokesman Soenarko Artanto told a news conference on the island. The arrested man left Bali three days before the deadly attacks, the Associated Press quoted Wahyu Wim Harjanto, a chief detective in neighbouring East Java province, as saying.  (BBC)

FROM THE EDITOR:

I am often entitled as an optimist. But now, with almost three months delay in the construction of the new bar, the people just call me a bule who has been in Indonesia too long. And it is true. Already for months I am saying that the bar will open 'within two weeks'.

Sponsors are thinking of withdrawing. 'Is this new place in Mega Kuningan really gonna happen?'. 'Yes, it is. Within two weeks', I keep on answering them. I brought Adel in from Paris to be part of the set up team. Now she is already planning her Christmas back in France again. I flew in Endjie (also known as Singga), but now she already returned to Bali again. 'Ah, Bart mah... Dua minggu muluh...!'. (Its two weeks all the time..!). I cannot blame them. And that is the frustrating part; I cannot blame anyone as so often in this country. The contractor blames the wood gallery. And the wood gallery blames the wood supplier. Etc etc. But now, finally there is progress and the end is near. Maybe another two weeks. But then it will finally be finished. Maybe....

There is this regular in BuGils. An Australian of Italian origin named Joe. A nice guy but on a daily basis he is asking me why I look so tired all the time. 'And that picture in your newsletter... Tell me: are you an alcoholic or are you born like that...?'. It is the same question every time I see him. So I was enjoyed to see that in last weeks' quiz night nobody knew who the little boy on the picture was.  While Wouter showed the picture on the big screen I heard the staff behind the bar whispering 'look how cute that little boy is.... siapa ya..?' On a table behind me there was a team, clearly non-regulars, whom I overheard: 'Could it be Rumsberg?' An older bold participant was sure it was this famous English comedian but he forgot the name. When Wouter a few minutes later gave the correct answer I noticed the heads of this group going everywhere. 'He!? Who? Who? Who the hell is Bartele Santema!?' The staff looked from the screen to me and back to the screen in disbelief. 'Bart!?' I closed my eyes and laid my head on the bar.

Where did it go wrong? Was it when I came to
Indonesia? Or was it when I started a bar business? For a few moments I dreamed back to the day when the picture was taken. I remembered the day clearly.  Just before the picture was taken, I played football on cloggies and fell, my nose bleed. But I kept on laughing. The optimist. It rained that day and when I came home I had to go into the meadows with my brother to find a missing lamb. In the pouring rain we found it, it was shaking of the cold, hopelessly lost from its mother. Why I write this backflash down in an Indonesian Expat Newsletter? I have no idea. Maybe it is time to go back again for a reality check. But first I've got to open that bar in two weeks time. I lift my head up from the bar again. It's Joe looking me straight in the eyes. 'He, Bartello! You are looking as fit as usual again. How is the waffle business?' I felt like the lost lamb in the rain.

I finished my beer and went home. Almost there I received a SMS from the contractor: 'The project is finished for 80 percent. How about the progress payment?' And you, my dear reader of this newsletter, who know me all so well by now, can predict the answer I sent back to them. Exactly.  Dua minggu lagi...  Mungkin (maybe). I opened the door to my apartment and although it was already late, my daughter woke up. From a deep sleep to an instant happily: 'Pappaaa...!'. Isn't live beautiful? I can be proud. My daughter is an optimist, just like me. -- Bartele

PS. A small celebration in BuGils tonight. Everybody who read this story till the end will get a free beer!

Would You Rather Own Google or Indonesia?: William Pesek Jr.
Think about it. A seven-year-old company that produces no physical products is now more valuable than the equity of Southeast Asia's biggest economy. Indonesia is an archipelago of some 18,000 islands holding natural resources --including oil -- that make the world's richest nations salivate. Google is, well, an Internet search tool. Which would you rather own: 100 percent of the Indonesian equities market or Google? Indonesia is the clear winner. Today's Cotton Gin? (Bloomberg)
