"The biggest threat against a positive development towards democracy in Indonesia,

is the culture of fear among our people...."

Australian model on drug charges denies Muslim dress a ploy

An Australian lingerie model facing drug charges in Indonesia has denied that she has adopted full-cover Muslim dress in detention to win favor with the authorities. Michelle Leslie said that her Muslim faith was helping her avoid going "crazy" in her police cell in Bali as she awaits trial on charges of possessing two ecstasy tablets.  If found guilty she could be jailed for up to 15 years. Leslie, who says she converted to Islam a year ago, last week began wearing a head-to-toe black Islamic outfit which also covers her face, Australia's national AAP news agency reported.

The 24-year-old beauty of Australian and Philippine heritage had modeled lingerie and swimwear before her arrest at a party on Bali last month. "It upsets me greatly that people think I am trying to manipulate the system," she said.  "Religion is helping me stay centered in the present moment. You have to find something otherwise your mind just goes crazy. "Next door, there's a mosque and I hear the call to prayer, the praying five times a day, and when you hear those sounds, it brings some sort of peace. "I know they're all praying, God's ears must be ringing." "For me, being a Muslim has really helped me through and that's all I really have to say about it." She also sent a message to her millionaire boyfriend Scott Sutton. "Words cannot describe how much I adore, idolize and love Scott.' She pleaded with the public not to pass judgment on her. Leslie is among 12 young Australians facing execution or long prison sentences in Indonesia for drug offenses. Jkt Post

Fan blade suspected as cause of Indonesia plane crash
The parents of a 5-year-old who had been given up for dead, meanwhile, were quietly celebrating after the boy was found alive in a hospital. "It's a miracle," said Pento's father, Tagor Pandjaitan, who was traveling to Jakarta with his son when the Boeing 737-200 started shaking violently seconds after takeoff on Monday and then burst into flames. "I was sure he was dead." (Taiwan News)

A Year Later, Munir’s Killers Evade Justice
On September 7, 2004, Munir died on Garuda flight 974 from Jakarta while en route from Indonesia to the Netherlands to pursue graduate studies. He complained of being unwell during the flight, and died just hours before the flight arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. Two months later, the Dutch Forensic Institute made public the findings of its autopsy, revealing that the cause of death was the presence of a lethal dose of arsenic in Munir's body. FROM THE EDITOR:

For the last few months I wasn't bothered walking around in shopping malls with my 6 or 7 month pregnant baby sitter. But recently - actually since the white pembantu uniform didn't fit her anymore - the looks have become increasingly suspicious. Especially in the Mata Hari clothes department I could feel hundreds pair of eyes bluntly staring at us. Finally this morning her replacement arrived from Solo. I asked my daughter, who is now three years old, if the new girl was ok. 'SIP!!', she shouted enthusiastically while putting her little thumb up in the air. She dragged the new babysitter through the house to show her her toys. One problem solved. But many more things to finish.

For example, I still haven't decided on the name for the new bar in Mega Kuningan yet. And the opening is scheduled for October 1st, so not much time left. The Fritz was one suggestion, as the bar will be next to the Ritz Carlton. Another was 'Tersera' meaning 'up to you'. Can you imagine the confusion with the taxi drivers if they ask you were you want to go.

'Huh? Ke mana Mister?'
'...Up to you...'.
A silence. The driver will adjust his mirror and will try to get a better look at his passenger.
'Loh..., mister wants to go somewhere... Ke mana ya?'
'Up to You', the passenger will say for the second time.
Now the driver will slow down his speed and slowly come to a stop at the side of the road. He will now turn around to have a full look at his passenger in the back without saying anything, totally confused. (I know they will react like this because I tried it out. I must have a sick mind or a terrible sense of humor...)

There are more decisions to be taken. The staff outing is next week and we still didn't book yet. We still haven't enough money yet for the Starcruise trip that goes from Singapore via Penang to Phuket. So now - as a last minute effort - the staff is creating BuGils T-shirts that they want to sell. Some suggestions for text on the shirts:

BuGils Tour Nakal 2005 (nakal=naughty)
BuGils to Phuket and back.... maybe....
BuGiRls Broads Abroad
BuGils, Less Sophisticated
BuGiRls Escape Regulars
BuGils Three in One

More suggestions are welcome. Then a special warning for all customers in the near future to BuGils: The crazy colonel is back. If you read the book Bule Gila you know the person I am talking about. He scares people off by telling them to watch out. Watch out for what? Nobody knows. Only the colonel. He can look aggressive but is actually quite innocent. If you happen to stand next to him at the bar (he normally stands in the far left corner of the bar), he can suddenly grasp your arm for a few seconds, look you straight in the eyes, and then lets you go again. I have a visitor over who last night in BuGils happened to stand on the other side of the bar, opposite the Colonel. Suddenly the colonel walked around the bar up to Johannes. 'Nobody takes things from behind the bar without permission from the staff', he told Johannes in an military way. Johannes didn't get the message and wanted to ask him what he was  referring to. He didn't have a change. 'No. You keep quiet', the colonel warned. 'Just sit here and shut up. I am keeping an eye on you.'. Johannes was stunned but before he could respond the colonel was back in his corner, putting up a warning finger in the direction of Johannes. The colonel is weird and disturbing but part of the interior and in general pretty harmless. Just don't hit him.

PS. Tonight LIVE Music in BuGils. Come and meet the colonel.

FROM A READER:

Dear Bartele,

I'm back to France since one week, and I will remember my stay in Jakarta, not only because I've done a good field work for my research on geopolitics, but because I discover your place, your book.

As I told you almost two weeks ago - I was then with my friend Faried - your book is more a sociological work than so many written about Indonesia today and wich are labeled "academic". You have done a nice portrait of this country I like - as you do - with sharpness, wit, and humor. I'm impatient to read the following book - you told me that another one is coming, don't you ? When exactly this book will be launch ?

When we were at Bugils Cafe last time, Faried took few pictures and I'm sure he will send it to you by e-mail soon - may be it's done already!

Thank's a lot for what you have done and do; I would be please to receive your newletter you told me about.  Philippe

-----------------

Dear Bart,  Your book took me back 30 years to when I worked at the American Embassy and then managed a bar & restaurant on the Balikpapan bay called the Teluk Indah Tavern or better known as the TIT Bar.  Your book provided many a smile and laugh-out-loud stories.  We were going to open up another bar in Jakarta and call it “The Other TIT”.

I married the daughter of an Indonesian diplomat and decided it was best to get out of the bar business and Balikpapan to raise a family. I look forward to visiting BuGils one day and swapping stories with you…..“Those were the days my friend, I thought they would never end…”  I have often thought of writing a book about it all but I haven’t got past the title, “The Last of the Balikpapan Heros”.

It seems from your book and newsletter you take good care of your staff and you are to be commended.  As you know, so many Indonesians get abused by their employers.
