Corby to launch final
appeal over 20-year sentence
An Australian woman
convicted for smuggling marijuana onto Indonesia's tourist island
of Bali plans to launch a final appeal to have her 20-year
sentence overturned, her lawyer said Friday. Schapelle Corby's
conviction last many for smuggling 4.2 kilograms of marijuana onto
Bali has triggered angry protests and intense media interest in
Australia, where many people say they believe she is innocent.
On Thursday, Indonesia's Supreme Court announced it had
rejected an earlier appeal and reinstated her 20-year sentence,
which had been cut to 15 years as the result of her first
petition. The marijuana was found by airport officials in
her surf board bag. Corby's defense team claims she was probably a
victim of a domestic drug ring involving corrupt Australian
baggage handlers who allegedly failed to retrieve the planted
marijuana before her bags were transferred to an international
flight. They have presented no evidence to back up this
theory. Dozens of foreigners are imprisoned for drug smuggling
every year in Indonesia, most of them African or Asians. Their
cases rarely make the news. (JKT P)

FROM THE EDITOR:

Three year old chases bule customer away
British customers don't like to see children in a cafe. It is
indeed not the healthiest place to be for a three year old kid,
but once in a while she joins me for one or two hours and only in
the daytime when it is quiet and not smoky. She loves it. Patricia
has more 'tante's' than any other kid. And she loves to
play pool. That was until this British customer came out of the
BuGils toilet, clearly irritated to see my little girl standing on
a chair trying to roll balls into far corner pockets. 'Go
home!', he said to her while bowing forward. 'I wanna
play pooool!', he continued with an 'ET' kind of
look. Patricia looked at the big man with big innocent eyes. I
noticed it from a distance. The man returned to the bar and asked
me if it was my daughter. I confirmed this and more or less
apologized that he was right and that she shouldn't be in a bar.
The babysitter had forgotten the apartment key and she was here to
pick it up. The unfriendly man grumbled something unclear and
ordered a beer.
With a coffee I went outside to the terrace. A few minutes later
the babysitter followed me, dragging a protesting Patricia
outside. I noticed that one arm of the babysitter was totally wet.
'Patricia nakal (naughty), Pak!' she said while
planting Patricia on a chair next to me. 'She threw a billiard
ball in the toilet!'. Patricia looked slightly irritated and
changed her attention to my coffee and the sugar pot next to it.
The babysitter dried her hand with a tissue. 'But I got it
back...', she said with a satisfied look on her face. I tried
to stop Patricia from emptying the sugar pot into my coffee. In
the confusion the coffee dropped over as well as the sugar pot.
Patricia run back inside but only to return two minutes later. 'Now
I wanna go home', she promptly said. The babysitter seemed
relieved. I gave her some taxi money and they left. I noticed a
very satisfying grim on Patricia's face.
Inside the bar the big bule customer was shouting at the pool
table: 'Where is that damn black ball!'
His
hand went from pocket to pocket. 'He, barman! You are missing a
ball here!' I apologised again and told him I would buy
a new one soon. Not desiring to be near this man I decided to sit
outside again with my freshly brewed coffee. It was only a few
minutes later when the same man walked out, angry for the third
time: 'I never come back again. Even your toilet doesn't work!
Its flowing over!'
Well done, Patricia. The man was unfriendly to you and you managed
to chase him away and never to return. Aku suka gaya kamu.
Now who is volunteering to stick his hand in the toilet to
get that black ball out again......

innocence

PS. Cazbar will be on TV tomorrow morning. Metro TV at 7 or

I have on sale ( now including the Bali Storm Beers!)
Unfortunately the staff managed -in front of the camera- to poor
the Belgium beer wrongly in the glass a record number of three
times. The fourth time I did it myself, but failed as well as the
beer was frozen. Aii... Hopefully they cut all this out, if not it
could become the biggest blooper of the year!!
